Designing The Maraya Ring
MEET MARAYA
For the past couple of months, I've been carefully working to develop the new collection for Mahnal. It's a pretty intensive process, but now that I've got the first official piece done I wanted to give you a little peek!
CONSTRUCTION:
DESIGNING MARAYA
First, I sketch out my design on my iPad, where I can quickly make edits or repeat details. I also add notes that I'll need to remember later when I start to build the design.
Next, I carve and build a model of the design out of wax blocks. Once I'm satisfied with the model and make all of my edits, I send it to be cast.
MEANING:
NAMING MARAYA
M I R R O R S
I've been working on opening up and bringing you in on that process more and even get input. I've been LOVING that so far, in fact, the name of this new piece, Maraya, was suggested by an Instagram follower. It's not only a beautiful name (pronounced: Mah-rah-yah), but it means 'mirrors' in Arabic.
Naming this piece 'mirrors' spoke to me immediately upon hearing it. I believe if it resonates with me, it'll probably resonate with someone else so I try to go with things that give me that feeling. 'Mirrors' felt special because essentially everything that we're attracted and drawn to (negative or positive) are like little mirrors reflecting different aspects within us.
That was really special for this particular piece to have that name because it is a double-sided ring that can be engraved with something personal to the wearer on either side. I've been wearing mine blank, but like that I can have something secret underneath on the other side. It's also just a fun ring to flip and play with.
I'd love to know what you think about the new Maraya ring? Simply reply to this email to let me know! :)
